PROJECT SUMMARY:
'Intuition' is a feeling which everyone knows and has experienced, but cannot explain. One cannot successfully make their intuition understood by others because he himself doesn't understand the logic of his intuitive mind which says "I just know". The social constructs make it a norm for thoughts and feelings to be understood when they are explained. However some feelings are just abstract- intuition is just one of them.
Design too is a social science ultimately as it is derived from the art of making thoughts understood visually. This project was an experiment to move away from this definition by bring out the abstraction of intuition. Typography too is a medium understood by everyone, but when the letter form is laid differently, that too in an environment where one doesn't expect to see it, it becomes abstract - much like intuition. Thus in this project, the abstract idea of 'intuition' was conveyed using typography which is straight-forward.
To convey abstraction in both scales, two separate installations and videos were made with different execution to avoid predictability. The videos have no people other than the person creating them because intuition is experienced in moments of complete privacy when a person is left alone.
THE MAKING:
The first installation was a seemingly big set of empty doors which in reality was a miniature set. The doors had knobs which were actually half-letter forms which became full only after the doors opened. Part of the letters was visibly real but didn't make sense, the other part of the letters which gave the entire transition meaning was a metaphysical reflection which didn't exist- just the way it goes with intuition.
The second set up too brought out the abstract essence of intuition with something that exists metaphysically- shadows. Blocks of reflecting material were suspended and aligned such that when an oscillating light was cast on them, the word "Intuition" was legible in a quick flash. The orientation of the Devanagari letters was rotated. This made the cast shadows of the blocks letter-ish in all the other angles. This installation consumed a massive area and was made such that one could walk through the letters as a spatial experience.
